Animal portraits have always been an important part of my art practise. I view each portrait is a very special project that will evoke memories and holds meaning for the animals' families. I work hard to capature the unique characteristics and personality of my subjects and always feel gratified when my clients are satisfied with the finished artwork. One of the best compliments I receive is when a client reaches out to commission more portraits. This portrait of two best friends, completed in November 2022, is the third portrait I have created for this particular family.

![]() Coloured Pencil Treasures Published by Ann Kullberg, 2019 These books feature master colored pencil artists from every corner of the earth, painstakingly selected from over 1,000 entries. My drawing Butterflies and Goosebumps was selected for Volume 6. In a previous edition, Volume 2, my drawing Wild Muscovy was featured. |
Art Bird Cards
My drawing of a pacific slope flycatcher is one of 35 images that make up the 2021 Art Bird Card Project, a co-operative venture of the Metchosin Foundation, Rocky Point Bird Observatory, the Metchosin ArtPod and local artists. These card sets feature common birds seen in the lower Vancouver Island area. One side features the artistic representation of the bird, and the other contains the bird’s name, identification information and some field notes. Card sets are available from the Metchosin Biodiversity Project. I contributed a drawing of a pileated woodpecker to the 2020 Art Bird Card Project. |
A fresh technique for coloured pencil
I've been experimenting with using coloured pencil in a way that doesn't involve framing with matting and glass. Instead, the finished drawing is varnished to protect the surface and framed as one would an oil or acrylic painting. It's a learning experience because the surface does not offer the same opportunities to achieve fine details, forcing me to loosen up and work differently. I have also been using ink crayons to enhance the colours. |
